Dr. Leigh Ann Clayton, DVM, DABVP (Avian Practice)
I use the least intrusive, most positive and humane techniques to address behavior challenges and ultimately improve the relationship between people and their exotic animal pets. I work with the caregiver and coach them through an evaluation process to identifying a personalized, realistic plan that can work in their unique situation. I utilize a scientific approach to behavior change which allows us to clearly define goals, needed actions, and measures of success. My focus is on teaching caregivers and their animals what to do in order for both to succeed. This allows us to focus on increasing desired behaviors rather than reducing undesired behaviors. This focus on increasing appropriate behavior leads to improved mental and physical health for the pet.
My approach to problem behavior is based in the science of applied behavior analysis. This science studies how individuals learn and is universally applicable across species. Behavior is evaluated in relation to the environment that immediately surrounds it. These environmental “brackets” are critical to understanding behavior and instrumental in developing sound behavior management plans.
My interest in animal behavior, training, and enrichment has grown over the years as I have witnessed first-hand how animals thrive in environments filled with choice and opportunities for positive reinforcement. I believe providing this type of environment is critical for animal health. So, in addition to addressing problem behavior, I also work with caregivers to help teach techniques for creating these environments in the home setting.
I have been a practicing veterinarian since 1997 and completed post-graduate clinical training programs in exotic animal medicine through an Internship in Zoo and Aquarium Medicine at Lincoln Park Zoo and Shedd Aquarium (Chicago, IL) and a Residency in Avian and Exotic Medicine and Surgery at Angell Animal Medical Center (Boston, MA). I was boarded in Avian Practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in 2005. I have a long standing interest in improving exotic pet health and welfare and to facilitate this goal have taken classes in animal behavior management such as Dr. Susan Friedman’s Living and Learning with Parrots for Professionals seminar and the Natural Encounters, Inc. Animal Training Workshop for Professionals.
